Beginner Q&A: Common Questions Answered

What level of equipment should I invest in when starting out — and what can wait?

This is one of the most common questions new voice actors ask, and the good news is: you do not need to spend a lot to get started. A budget USB microphone, free software like Audacity, and some basic acoustic treatment (even a closet full of clothes works!) are more than enough for your first recordings.

As a practical guideline: aim to spend only about 0.5–1% of your annual earnings on equipment and marketing, year over year. This keeps your margins healthy and ensures you are reinvesting sustainably as your career grows — rather than overspending before the income is there to support it.

Invest in Early
  • A reliable budget microphone (USB is perfectly fine)
  • Free recording software such as Audacity
  • Basic noise reduction — a recording shield or a quiet closet
Can Wait Until Later
  • A professional soundproofed studio
  • High-end condenser microphones
  • Paid editing software (e.g., Adobe Audition)
  • A full dedicated home studio build-out

Is there a specific genre or niche I should focus on first to build credibility in the audiobook space?

There is no single right answer here — and anyone who tells you otherwise is oversimplifying a deeply personal decision. What matters most at the start is not which niche you pick first, but that you are crystal clear with yourself about what you are — and are not — comfortable narrating.

Set your boundaries before you take your first booking. Decide internally what types of content, themes, language, and subject matter you will and will not narrate. This includes mature content, violence, controversial topics, or anything that conflicts with your personal values. Having those lines drawn ahead of time protects you — professionally and personally.

Questions to Help You Find Your Niche

  • What genres do you genuinely enjoy reading or listening to?
  • What vocal qualities do you naturally have — warm and conversational, dramatic, authoritative?
  • Are there subject areas (fiction, non-fiction, self-help, thrillers) that feel like a natural fit?
  • What content are you absolutely not willing to narrate? Write it down and honor it.

Once you know your niche, how you market yourself to the industry matters just as much as your talent. Your social media presence, the way you describe your services, and the language you use publicly all send signals to directors and authors — and getting that messaging right from day one is a competitive advantage most beginners overlook.
